A Modern Wine Country Estate in Kenwood

A Christopherson Builders Custom Home Story

Nestled among the vineyards and oak-studded hills of Sonoma Valley, this custom estate home in Kenwood represents far more than exceptional architecture — it is the realization of a family’s vision to build a home designed to embrace the beauty and lifestyle of Wine Country.

Following the loss of the original residence, the homeowners partnered with Christopherson Builders and architect Farrell Faber to create an entirely new estate that honors the character of the property while reimagining it for modern living. The result is a timeless Modern Farmhouse that feels as though it has always been a part of the landscape.

Designed Around the Landscape

Rather than imposing itself on the land, the approximately 3,500-square-foot single-level residence was carefully designed to celebrate its surroundings. The shared and private spaces enjoy a visual connection to the outdoors, while nearly 900 square feet of covered outdoor living creates a natural extension of the home’s interior.

The residence is organized around a central swimming pool, with the home’s primary living spaces positioned to overlook the outdoor environment. Folding glass door systems open the great room directly to the covered loggia, extending the living area while reinforcing the connection between the architecture and the surrounding landscape. The layout reflects a design approach that responds to both the site and Sonoma Valley’s climate, emphasizing natural light, framing views, and accentuating year-round indoor-outdoor living.

Architecture Inspired by Wine Country

Designed by architect Farrell Faber, the residence embraces a contemporary interpretation of Wine Country architecture, where clean forms, natural materials, and carefully proportioned spaces define the overall design. The single-level floor plan is organized beneath vaulted ceilings that extend throughout the primary living areas, creating volume while maintaining a sense of intimacy.

Material selection was approached with equal restraint. Rift-cut wood cabinetry, natural stone, plaster finishes, and wide-plank oak flooring establish a warm, neutral palette that allows texture and craftsmanship to become the defining architectural elements. Throughout the home, integrated lighting, custom millwork, and carefully detailed built-ins contribute to a cohesive interior language without overwhelming the spaces.

The kitchen serves as the functional center of the residence, anchored by an oversized island and framed by custom cabinetry, a sculptural plaster range hood, and a dedicated wine display that reflects the home’s Wine Country setting. Adjacent dining and living spaces remain visually connected, while a floor-to-ceiling fireplace creates a natural focal point within the great room. Large folding glass door systems extend these gathering spaces to the covered loggia and pool terrace, reinforcing the home’s relationship with the surrounding landscape.

A Home Designed for Everyday Luxury

Every aspect of the floor plan was thoughtfully planned around the way the homeowners live.

The private primary retreat occupies its own wing of the residence, creating a peaceful sanctuary complete with a dedicated fitness room and spa-inspired bath. Separate guest suites, a private office, and a media room are thoughtfully positioned on the opposite wing, providing flexibility for extended family, overnight guests, and working from home without sacrificing privacy.

This careful separation of spaces allows the home to comfortably accommodate both lively gatherings and quiet moments of retreat—a hallmark of exceptional custom residential design.  Working closely with the homeowners throughout the design and construction process, Christopherson Builders transformed the vision into a residence that reflects the family’s lifestyle while embracing the beauty of its Sonoma Valley setting. Every detail, from the architectural planning to the interior finishes, was carefully considered to create a home that will serve generations to come.
