As there is always beautification and improvement when remodeling, the words are often used interchangeably, but there is a difference between the two.

When renovating your home, the general layout of the home will essentially remain the same.  No structural modifications are made; rather, the work done is to update the look and feel of the home.

Renovations can be replacing cabinetry and counters in kitchens and baths, putting in new flooring, and in the event that old, damaged wood is discovered, it can also mean changing out beams with new lumber.  Renovating your home is typically less costly than remodeling and can give you the desired effect of a fresh, new space.

Remodeling, on the other hand, is more involved and changes the structure.  Projects that can constitute a remodel are building an addition, changing the layout of the home, adding and removing walls in addition to making interior and exterior design changes.
